Senegal and Guinea have both advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations’ round of 16 after coming through a curious Group B. Neither of the two looked all that much better than Malawi and Zimbabwe, but they have progressed nonetheless.
In a low-scoring AFCON so far, Senegal have managed to go through as group winners having scored just one goal. They drew 0-0 with Malawi and Guinea and beat Zimbabwe with a 97th-minute strike from Sadio Mane.
Senegal were close to falling to a defeat against the competition’s lowest-ranked side in Malawi, though, and had VAR to thank for a penalty awarded against them being overturned.
Guinea, for their part, managed to progress in second despite losing 2-1 to Zimbabwe on the final day of Group B action. They finished level on four points with Malawi but advanced.
Malawi now have to wait until the end of the last day of group action to learn if they will progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
