Leao close to extending with Milan as he and Mendes battle €16.5m sentence

There is a delay regarding the renewal of Rafael Leao despite the fact that an agreement is close because of a sentence against the forward, a report claims.

MilanNews confirms that the Portuguese international is negotiating the extension of his contract with Milan and the parties are close. The 22-year-old wants to stay at Milan and the feeling is that an agreement will be found, but there is another issue that occupies Leao’s mind and that is the one with Sporting Lisbon.

Leao left Sporting when ultras broke into the training ground and attacked some players, and the latest sentence handed down on the case relating to his unilateral termination of the contract condemned him to pay €16.5m to the Lisbon club.

This is an enormous figure for one player to be on the hook for, so that triggered an appeal to the TAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). The Swiss court are conciliatory in nature so Rafa and Jorge Mendes expect a more positive mediation on the amount of compensation.
