Derby County have endured quite the week.
The Championship club entered administration after a nightmare year of numerous off-field dramas.
With that came the automatic 12-point penalty, plunging Wayne Rooney’s side into a relegation battle. There could be more misery on the horizon too, with talk of another deduction due to financial breaches.
For now, the club’s administrator Andrew Hosking is trying to cut costs as he looks to tie up a new investor to finance the club.
And a report in the Sun says that Steve McClaren, the former Derby and England boss who works as an advisor, will be the first to leave the club.
The 60-year-old was only hired on a consultancy basis last November.
The report adds that McClaren has a potential new job lined up with either FIFA or UEFA.
Meanwhile, administrators are said to have already received ‘seven or eight credible expressions of interest’ in buying the club.
The Mail claims that potential bidders are UK-based, while there is ‘substantial’ interest from the United States.
On the field, Rooney’s team were cruelly beaten in the last minute on Saturday.
They had defended well against Sheffield United but goalkeeper Kelle Roos’ sending off before the hour mark handicapped them.
And the one-man advantage proved crucial in the final minute when Billy Sharp netted the winner from the penalty spot.
It leaves Derby bottom on minus-two points – nine adrift of fourth-bottom Peterborough.
Rooney said after yesterday’s defeat: “Yes, it’s cruel but that’s football. The plan was to try and stay in the game and nick that win in the last 10 or 15 minutes. I thought we were on course to do that.
“Of course Sheffield United had more possession than us, but we were sticking in there and we probably had the best chances of the game. Another day we take one of them, and it is different, and obviously the red card changes those plans.
“And then it is cruel to concede a penalty late on. Maybe Tom (Lawrence) on another day scores that (late chance) and we get a point out of the game.
“Again it shows to everyone how prepared and how ready the players are to fight for this club.”
