Mbappé informs PSG of decision to not renew contract

According to reports in France (first L’Équipe, and then Radio Monte Carlo), Kylian Mbappé has already informed PSG that he will not renew his contract with the club, which expires in June 2022. It is not a direct invitation to be transferred this summer, as Mbappé has explained to the Ligue 1 club that he will serve out the remaining year of his contract, but it certainly puts PSG in a tricky position: they must now decide whether to risk letting him leave for free in a year’s time or take a big fee for one of their star players now.

Contract expires at PSG in 2022

Mbappé is not opposed to playing out his remaining year, but he does hope that circumstances will lead PSG to open up to negotiating, which is what Real Madrid want. PSG, despite making impressive signings ahead of the new season, are going through difficult times financially.

In the 2019/20 season, as a result of the coronavirus crisis, they lost €125 million and in the 2020/21 season, the forecast was estimating losses of €200 million. However, they have signed Wijnaldum for free (€10 million net salary per year) and are close to announcing the signings of Ramos, Donnarumma and Achraf. These are major investments that will make it all the more necessary to bring in cash to balance the books.

Madrid waiting for a call

Real Madrid’s idea is to wait for a call from PSG if they finally agree to put a price on Mbappé; if that is not the case, they are confident that he will arrive for free in 2022, which would be much cheaper. Mbappé would have to be paid a signing bonus, but it would always be less than the cost of his signing this summer.

Now everything depends on PSG: keep Mbappé for a year knowing that in 2022 he will leave for free or sell him now at a good price and with that fix a large part of their financial problems, leaving the team to be led by Neymar, Ramos, Achraf, Verratti and Di María.

Madrid have done their part of the job and are now waiting for the stars to align to seal the deal that should set them up for the next decade.
