Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals what Man Utd did in six hours at Old Trafford before kick-off

Manchester United were forced to arrive at Old Trafford six hours before kick-off against Liverpool on Thursday night due to fears over fan protests, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted their build-up wasn’t impacted.

United players drove themselves to the ground prior to the match, due to fears fans would try and block the arrival of the team coach.

Fans were out in their numbers to protest against the ownership of the club, and successfully forced the postponement of the fixture last week by blocking the team bus from leaving the Lowry hotel.

But Solskjaer insisted the disrupted preparations didn’t have an impact, as the club turned Old Trafford into a makeshift hotel to accommodate their needs.

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to the match, he confirmed that his players were able to have their pre-match meal as well as hold team meetings.

He said: “The boys have been focused.

“We reported a little bit earlier at the stadium but we’ve had lunch, we’ve had meetings, we’ve had the pre-match meal as normal and ready to play a game of football.

“We’ve tried to keep it as close to normal as possible for them, but obviously the early reporting time was a little bit different.

“They’ve been very good at adjusting and adapting. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, football’s not been the same.

“Project Restart started with the boys washing their own clothes – they’ve grown through parts of this period as well.”

Fans did, as predicted, turn out at Old Trafford to protest the Glazer Family, but protests were peaceful.

There was no repeat of fans breaking into the stadium and getting onto the pitch, and United had deployed a mass security presence to ensure the game went ahead without any hitches.

There were concerns when an official Liverpool team bus was blocked in the streets of Manchester and fans deflated the tires, but it emerged Liverpool players were on a different vehicle and made it to the ground without any problems.
