Jurgen Klopp opens up on Alisson’s emotional turmoil and reveals dressing room story

Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to Alisson’s “unbelievable” injury-time winner against West Brom.

The keeper’s stunning header has kept Liverpool’s Champions League dreams alive as he went up for a late corner to secure a 2-1 victory for the Reds.

It will go down as one of the most dramatic winning goals in Premier League history as the Brazilian got on the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece in stoppage time.

And the Liverpool boss has hailed the “insane” moment of brilliance from his no.1 goalie.

He told Sky Sports: “Pfft. Unbelievable. The header was unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like that. It was insane, great technique.

“Nowadays you cannot be sure, is something wrong. So I turned around ‘Am I right, did we score?’

“It’s great for the boys, it means a lot for us, we are still in the race, that’s all we can do.

“Wednesday, there will be the same fight and I have to say props to West Brom for their professionalism as they fought with all they had and made it really difficult for us, but we did it in the end.”

Alisson has gone through a turbulent time off the field with the passing of his father three months ago.

And Klopp knows exactly how much that moment will mean to him on a personal level as he revealed it was the keeper’s decision to go up for the corner.

He said: “We are really close so I know exactly what it means to him and what he thought in that moment and it’s outstanding. It’s really touching, it’s only football but it means the world to us. Now let’s keep going.

“It’s a normal situation, last minute of the game. We get a corner, we want an extra man but it was his decision I’m pretty sure.”

On a more light-hearted note, Klopp also revealed that he had to check Alisson’s name was on the squad list as he reminisced about a time when he was a player when his keeper teammate’s stoppage-time goal was chopped off due to his ineligibility.

He added: “I told the boys in the dressing room when I was a player a goalie scored a last-minute goal. It was the equaliser so we were celebrating like crazy.

“We came in the dressing room and then the club officials told us the name was wrong on the squad list so they took the points away from us.

“I checked (Alisson’s name) so everything is alright. The game is our season in a nutshell, we do a lot of good stuff but we get hammered for the first mistake and we have to work like crazy.

“I told the boys nobody got over the top when it was 1-1 with the minutes going down and down. We had the best chances, but we kept playing football. It’s really difficult against this side, how they defend and set up.

“But we needed Ali to sort it for us.”
