Cristiano Ronaldo’s defiant transfer message amid Man Utd return links

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo says he isn’t concentrating on his club future as he is focusing on his national side winning the Euros.

The Juventus star has been linked with a return to his former club Manchester United recently as it has been reported the Italian club can no longer afford his wages.

United fans would delight at the return of their beloved forward, who played for the Premier League side from 2003-2009.

The star, though, seems less fazed about what club he will play at next season.

“Now, I’m 36. If I’m staying? It doesn’t matter now. What happens will be for the best.

“Now I’m focused on the European Championship, I want to win and I want to have positive thoughts from the first to the last game.”

Portugal find themselves in what is being dubbed the ‘Group of Death’ as they face France, Hungary and Germany.

The defending Euro champions will first face Hungary and then Germany and they will have to play them without star defender Joao Cancelo who tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

Portugal’s manager Fernando Santos has replaced him with Diogo Dalot and Ronaldo added the team remain focused on their opener on Tuesday.

He added: “It won’t be a big factor right now. The more we focus on something, the more we concentrate on that. It was a shame that Joao tested positive, but we’re not worried about that.

“We haven’t even talked about COVID-19. It’s a topic that tires everyone. Unfortunately we have to live with it. In my opinion, this team is focused on the game.

“It will be the first European Championship game for many of them. The rest doesn’t affect this team. We respect all the rules but we are focused on the pitch.”

And the skipper then reacted to being the first player to ever take part in five Euros.

“I’m not overwhelmed, it’s a good record. But the most important thing will be to try to win the Euros again. We are working well, since the first training session.

“We are all ready and tomorrow I hope we can start on the right foot. It’s important to start with a win.

“The fans will be on our side, but it’s nice to play in a full stadium: I’m ready.

“It’s always better to start with a win. But if you tell me that if we lose tomorrow, we would win the European Championship, then I would choose that option.

“However, we are ready, physically and emotionally. Our players are young, I’m convinced we will have a great European Championship and that all the players are ready.”
