Steve Bruce leaves position as Newcastle head coach
Paulo Fonseca is poised to succeed Steve Bruce as Newcastle boss – with Frank Lampard understood to have pulled out of the running.
As first reported by Mirror Football on October 8, Magpies co-owner Amanda Staveley wants to hand a long-term deal to Fonseca worth £6million-a-year – but she had been facing opposition from co-owner Jamie Reuben who wanted Lampard.
Bruce’s former assistant Graeme Jones will stay in interim charge for the next two games with discussions between the competing voices ongoing.
But Lampard is believed to share the concerns of a string of managers concerned about Newcastle’s prospects of staying in the Premier League. The club are second from bottom and winless after eight games with matches to come against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and in-form Brighton.

Fonseca, 48, impressed in his interview with the club with his short and long-term vision for the Magpies along with his teams’ style of play.
The former Roma boss is known to be ready to leave his family in Rome to base himself in Newcastle and commit himself to transforming the second-from-bottom club’s fortunes.
A winner of nine trophies at Shakhtar, Fonseca has inspired Staveley and excited fans with his CV which includes leading Pacos de Ferreira to third in the Portuguese top flight, meaning they qualified for their first ever Champions League.

In the three seasons at Shakhtar he clinched the Ukrainian double every time. During the 2017-18 campaign he led the club to the last 16 of the Champions League.
In his first year at Roma he led them to fifth and went out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage to eventual winners Sevilla.
