Kai Havertz finally shows worth for Chelsea – and may be hitting his stride at the perfect time

Kai Havertz was the star man for Chelsea with a superb performance in an easy 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

The 21-year-old has had his critics since making the move to Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, and has so far failed to live up to his £72m transfer fee.

But Blues fans will be hoping this was the match where he turned a corner after he dazzled at Selhurst Park to inspire his side to an away win against a lethargic Palace.

Thomas Tuchel’s team got off to a stunning start in South London, with two goals inside the opening ten minutes.

Havertz opened the scoring with a neat curling effort from a tight angle to show what was to come.

And just two minutes later it was effectively game over when Christian Pulisic slammed home from the German winger’s smart pull-back.

Chelsea could have had more in a totally dominant first half, with Havertz taunting and tormenting the Eagles defence at every opportunity.

And Kurt Zouma headed home his fifth goal of the season from a Mason Mount free-kick on the half-an-hour mark to pile the misery on Roy Hodgson and his players.

Palace grabbed one back on 62 minutes with a thumping Christian Benteke header, but after that the Blues looked more likely to score the next goal, with Havertz missing a good chance when put through on goal.

But Pulisic grabbed his second shortly afterwards to round of the scoring.

Tuchel will be delighted to see his side get back to winning ways following their shock 5-2 defeat to West Brom last week.

And the result sees them stay two points above Liverpool in fourth place after the Reds’ 2-1 win against Aston Villa earlier in the day.

Perhaps just as important as the result to Tuchel was Havertz’s showing, however.

And with the Blues still with much to play for in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, the club’s record signing may well be hitting his stride at the perfect time.
