John Murtough has chance to complete four Man Utd transfers Ed Woodward couldn’t

Manchester United’s new football director John Murtough is expected to have a big role in transfer activity this summer.

The former academy chief will take some of the responsibilities usually held by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who will take a step back from transfer dealings.

United fans have voiced their concerns in the past over Woodward, who had no history in football prior to joining the club shortly after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, having such a big say in transfers.

He faced the brunt of supporters’ frustrations after last summer’s Jadon Sancho fiasco, with United failing in spectacular style to sign the Borussia Dortmund winger.

This summer, however, United will have the chance to sign four of their old transfer targets in what could be a huge window for the club.

Mirror Football has taken a look at the players United could reignite an interest in this summer.

Paulo Dybala

Juventus ace Paulo Dybala has been heavily linked with United on numerous occasions in the past.

Prior to United’s £46.6million acquisition of Bruno Fernandes the Red Devils were intent on signing the Argentine playmaker, and Woodward was even believed to have held talks with Dybala’s agent.

This summer, however, the deal could be back on, with reports suggesting Juventus are considering offering up Dybala in exchange for Paul Pogba in a blockbuster trade.

Sergio Ramos

Real Madrid centre-back Sergio Ramos could well be available for free this summer as he nears the end of his contract.

The Spaniard turned down United in the past, and was close to making the move at one point.

But this year, with Madrid looking at both Pau Torres and David Alaba, it could well be that Ramos could make way.

Rafael Varane

Ramos might not be the only Madrid defender leaving this summer, with Raphael Varane also close to the end of his current deal.

The Frenchman could well be sold this year to avoid Madrid losing him on a free in January, with United eager to sign a new centre-back.

Madrid are believed to be cautious over the likelihood of Varane signing a new deal, and could well look to get him sold this summer.

Erling Haaland

Before United tried to sign Sancho, their top target was then-RB Salzburg star Erling Haaland.

The dominant forward was top of their shortlist, but despite Woodward’s best efforts he ended up signing for Borussia Dortmund instead.

Now, however, he could be available again, with a release clause of £68m putting clubs around Europe on red alert.

A transfer scramble is expected for his signature with United likely to be in the mix.
