Daniel James sends message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Man Utd eye new signings

Daniel James believes he is “nowhere near his potential” at Manchester United after struggling to make an impact in his second season at Old Trafford.

James had an underwhelming second campaign after shining following his move from Swansea City in 2019.

The Wales international made less than half as many league starts as in his first season, and scored just five times in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Other options were often preferred to James on the wing, with teenage sensation Amad and youngster Facundo Pellistri also joining the club in January.

United are also being heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho again this summer, with a wealth of attacking options meaning James’ game time could become even more limited.

But the 23-year-old says he is constantly improving and learning at the club as he sent a clear message to Solskjaer that he has plenty more to offer.

“I think I’m developing every single game,” he told United’s official website.

“I’m learning. I reflect on every game and every season I’ve played, whether I’ve played zero minutes, whether I play all the games, I think I’m always learning.

“For me, I’m nowhere near my potential and I just want to keep improving.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a keen admirer of James but is also looking to add reinforcements this summer as he plans a Premier League title charge.

United showed progress under Solskjaer with a second place finish in the last campaign.

But the failure to win silverware after the Europa League final loss on penalties to Villarreal will put pressure on the Norwegian next season.

It is widely recognised that United need to strengthen in a number of positions, including a wide attacking role that James prefers to occupy.

Solskjaer has confirmed United won’t sit back in the market and are actively seeking transfer targets this summer.

“We are second best, but too far behind to threaten those who won. Then we have to strengthen ourselves,” he told TV2.

“Of course, something will happen in the transfer window.

“The world has become very different than 15-16 months ago, but we have to make some moves on the transfer window, but also with the team.

“It is never possible to sit back. You are constantly looking for reinforcements.

“Football is dynamic, so unexpected things can happen such as injuries, illness, something familiar or that someone wants to move.

“You have to take everything possible into consideration and reflection. I will never sit down and think that ‘now the team is the way I want it to be’, because you always see some other players or other teams doing something you want.”
