Real Madrid – La Liga: Lucas Vazquez’s season is over

Lucas Vazquez‘s season came to an end as Real Madrid beat Barcelona in Saturday night’s Clasico, and it might prove to have been his last game for the club.

The Galician was involved in a collision with Sergio Busquets, with the Barcelona midfielder arriving late into a challenge, which led to the Real Madrid utility man coming off worse for wear.

“Following tests carried out today on Lucas Vazquez by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprain to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” read a Real Madrid statement on Sunday morning. “His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

The club didn’t put any timeframe into their statement, but Lucas will be out for what’s left of the 2020/21 season, meaning he’ll play no further part as Los Blancos go in search of a second consecutive LaLiga Santander title and yet another Champions League success.

With just seven LaLiga Santander games left to play, and the Champions League’s quarter-finals already halfway to completion, a return to the pitch this season is too much to expect.

Lucas‘ contract at Real Madrid expires this summer and his future remains up in the air. He had become vital for Zinedine Zidane this season, filling in in a number of positions for the Spanish champions, and he had been one of Los Blancos‘ most consistent and reliable players.

In fact, Lucas‘ form had been so good that he was even in contention for Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for the delayed European Championship.

Doubts around Valderde

As if Lucas‘ absence wasn’t bad enough news after the Clasico, Fede Valverde is a doubt for the second leg against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Uruguayan had to come off against Barcelona and the early signs suggest that he won’t be fit enough to face the English champions.
