While it’s no secret that the team could use a focal point in attack and are in need of a top-class centre forward, however, Guardiola appears set on addressing other positions first.

The coach is said to have his eye on a player at his former club Barcelona and is reportedly ready to put an offer on the table.

That will then leave the centre forward position needing to be filled, with City reportedly ready to rival Spurs for one big name.

Vlahovic has emerged as an alternative option to Harry Kane following City’s failed attempt to bring him to the Etihad last summer.

But according to the report in the Italian press, City still have ‘Harry Kane as a primary objective’, but could turn to the Fiorentina striker if their bid for him fails.

The Italians, aware of the potential bidding war that could take place, ‘hope to take advantage of it and keep the price high: that is, between €60-70m’.

And former Premier League footballer Noel Whelan has told Football Insider the defender ‘ticks all the boxes’ of what the St James’ Park outfit need.

“I think that signing ticks all the boxes for Newcastle, Whelan said. “Eddie Howe had him at Bournemouth, and was excellent for him there, that makes it a no-brainer.
