Barcelona: Xavi wants to sign Meunier: Barcelona make contact with Dortmund

Xavi Hernandez‘s priority is for Barcelona to beef up their attack by signing a striker or a winger, but the Blaugrana boss also believes that the full-back positions could do with being strengthened.

The 42-year-old has set his sights on Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier, and Barcelona have already made contact with the German club about bringing him to Catalonia before the end of the January transfer window.

Dortmund and Meunier are open to the possibility of the 30-year-old moving to Barcelona, who want to sign the Belgium international on loan until the end of the season.

Waiting for Dembele

However, Barcelona are still uncertain as to whether they will be able to move for more players in January, with the Ousmane Dembele situation being key to their transfer planning.

Should Dembele renew his contract or depart the club, Barcelona will have enough space in their wage cap to make at least two signings.

Dest and Mingueza

If Barcelona fail to extend Dembele‘s contract or cash in on the Frenchman, they would be willing to part ways with both Oscar Mingueza and Sergino Dest.

Mingueza has attracted interest from Valencia and Bordeaux, while Xavi doesn’t seem to have a place in his plans for Dest, who does not want to leave the Camp Nou.

Experience and a presence

Meunier could provide Barcelona‘s defence with more experience and help them improve when it comes to aerial duels. The Belgium international has earned 54 caps with the Red Devils and has been regularly featuring in the Champions League since 2016, first with Paris Saint-Germain and now with Dortmund.

In addition, he stands at 1.91m tall, so Barcelona could definitely use his height on set pieces.

Tagliafico deal

Meanwhile, Barcelona are still working on the potential signing of Nicolas Tagliafico from Ajax. The two teams have entered into talks, but they have yet to reach an agreement.

What is for sure is that Alejandro Balde, who was tipped to be part of the deal, is not keen on going the other way to Ajax.
