Barcelona: Umtiti willing to leave on loan, but wants a chance to prove himself first

Barcelona have been trying to shop Samuel Umtiti for some time, with the defender’s salary too high for his disappointing performances since his knee injury. Yet the player wants a chance to prove himself first.

The Catalan club have tried in previous transfer windows to find a solution, but were not helped by the fact the player had no interest in leaving. Now, though, the Frenchman has accepted he could be on the way out this summer.

Problems with the wage bill

Barcelona‘s financial woes are no secret and Umtiti has been earmarked as someone whose wages needs shifted from the books.

The issue has become more urgent and there was even talk that the club might look to release him from his contract, as they did days ago with Matheus Fernandes, but that would bring its own cost as he still has two years left on his deal.

It now seems most likely that the 27-year-old will be loaned out this summer as no club would be willing to part with a transfer fee to sign him.

A tough sale

Umtiti‘s injury record is the reason why many clubs are reluctant to take a risk on him. Physically, however, he is said to be in his best shape since 2016 and he wants a chance to prove it.

Ronaldo Koeman doesn’t appear to be counting on Umtiti for the coming season, but the defender nevertheless wants the opportunity to change his mind.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the Dutch coach might only have Gerard Pique and Umtiti available at centre-back as the season approaches, due to the international commitments of the other four in the squad. They may require extended rest periods or need time to get up to speed.

If Umtiti impresses between now and then, he will be hoping to stay. However, he has finally accepted that, if not, then he will be packing his bags later this summer.
