Odegaard signed in January and became a key component of Arteta’s squad in the closing months of the campaign.

“He’s not our player. We will have discussions in the next few weeks. And respect first of all because he’s a Real Madrid player, and we will have those communications.

“We’ve tried to make everything that we could to get Martin performing for the team, which I think he’s done.

“And he’s adapted really well to our way of playing and to our football club. And hopefully we have given him as well the hope and the feeling that it could be a good place for him.”

The midfielder’s future at the Bernabeu is uncertain, particularly after the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as manager earlier this week.

The Italian namechecked him, alongside fellow loanees Gareth Bale and Dani Ceballos, hinting they could be given a fresh chance.

“With this squad, without loan players like Bale, Odegaard and [Dani] Ceballos, Madrid reached the Champions League semis and fought for La Liga,” said the 61-year-old. “So we have the players to win trophies.”

Odegaard himself has admitted that Ancelotti’s return to Los Blancos is a positive for him as he looks to become a regular in the Spanish capital.

“He is a coach I know and with whom I had a good relationship when he was last there,” Odegaard told TV2 earlier this week. “In that sense, it is positive.

“But beyond that, one day has passed, so I do not know too much about what he thinks about things.”

Ruben Neves is the latest name to be linked with a potential move, with Wolves believed to be holding out for around £35million.
