Brendan Rodgers’ reaction to Ralf Rangnick’s Man Utd appointment

Ralf Rangnick confirmed as Manchester United interim manager

Brendan Rodgers claimed Ralf Rangnick will bring “experience and stability” to Old Trafford as he praised Manchester United’s latest managerial appointment.

Rangnick, 63, has joined the Red Devils as interim boss on a short-term deal lasting until the end of the season, succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaerafter the Norwegian was sacked in November.

The highly-regarded German was previously in the dugout at Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig, while he also has a wealth of experience as a sporting director.

When his time as manager ends next summer, he will become a consultant for the next two years to help shape United’s future.

As part of this role, Rangnick is expected to contribute to the process of appointing the club’s next permanent boss.

Leicester City manager Rodgers, 48, is one of the candidates linked with the role despite the fact he has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at the King Power.

United are reportedly willing to pay the Foxes £8million in compensation to prise the former Liverpool boss from the East Midlands, although Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto Mancini are also in the frame.

For his part, Rodgers distanced himself from the United job in mid-November, although that was prior to Solskjaer’s dismissal following the humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford.

Rodgers found himself discussing the Red Devils once again this week as he was asked for his verdict on United’s appointment of Rangnick.

The Northern Irishman responded: “I think they have appointed a very experienced man in football, both in his role as a sporting director and as a coach.

“I don’t know Ralf personally. I came across him when I was at Liverpool and we had a phone conversation.

“And then at Celtic, I played against his Red Bull Leipzig team but he’s clearly a very, very experienced guy who is very well thought of in the game.

“And he will come in and offer that experience and that stability to the club and they will assess it from there.”

Rodgers was speaking ahead of Leicester’s trip to Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

United are in action the following day as they host Arsenal, but Rangnick will not be in the hot seat as he continues to wait for a work permit.

This means caretaker manager Michael Carrick will take charge for a third game having led the Red Devils to a 2-0 Champions League victory over Villarreal and a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
