Arsenal vs Wolves, Mat Ryan injury, Bernd Leno red card, Mikel Arteta

Mat Ryan is in line for his Arsenal debut – if he can prove his fitness in time.

Ryan missed Arsenal’s clash with Wolves with a minor hip injury and as a result also was denied the opportunity to fill-in for first-choice keeper Bernd Leno.

Leno was sent off when he rushed out of his area and punched the ball out for a throw-in with Runar Alex Runarsson brought in as a replacement between the sticks.

The Gunners fell short 2-1 and will be without Leno for their next clash against Aston Villa, meaning Ryan could be in the frame for his club debut.

Previous to the Wolves’ game the team releseased a statement confirming it was a right hip issue for Ryan and that they were “hopeful” he would return to full training in the coming days.

After the one-goal loss more attention turned towards Ryan’s health and potential availability for the Villa contest but Mikel Arteta was less-than-convincing.

“He [Ryan] had a muscular issue and in the last two days he hasn’t been able to train. Hopefully we can get him back in the next few days,” Arteta said.

“I imagine he [Leno] makes the decision in a split of a second and naturally he tries to stop the ball, there’s nothing he can do.”

Ryan’s loan move to Arsenal was largely celebrated as a smart piece of business from the Gunners.

The Socceroos keeper fell out of favour at Brighton with Robert Sanchez backed as the first-choice No. 1.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown told talkSPORT at the time it was a shrewd decision if Leno was unavailable for any reason.

“So this is a good adjustment, Mat Ryan coming in – 59 caps for Australia, he’s their No. 1 goalkeeper, he’s been out of the team at Brighton,” he said.

“He’s coming with good experience and that’s what Arsenal need in the event that Leno gets injured at any point.”
