Arsenal transfer round-up: Goalkeeper search continues as third bid for Ben White prepared

Mikel Arteta is expected to oversee a number of key outgoings and arrivals this summer as the Spaniard aims to recover from a dismal first full season at the helm to try and restore the Gunners to their former glories.

A second successive eighth-placed finish ensures that the pressure is on the Arsenal boss to turn things around, as they prepare for their first season without European competition of any kind for two and a half decades.

Focusing entirely on the Premier League may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Arsenal, as they bid to return to the top four for the first time since 2016.

The Gunners have already confirmed the departure of troublemaker Matteo Guendouzi, who has joined Ligue 1 outfit Marseille on loan, though that deal is expected to be made permanent at the end of the campaign.

Martin Odegaard was rumoured to be a target for Arsenal, but despite spending the tail-end of last term on loan at the Emirates, the Norwegian international has since returned to parent club Real Madrid.

Granit Xhaka is also expected to call time on his five year Arsenal career in favour of a move to Serie A side AS Roma.

With that in mind, here is Wednesday’s Arsenal transfer-round up as some incomings creep closer.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion star Ben White is quickly becoming one of the transfer saga’s of the summer.

The Gunners have already had two bids for the centre-half rejected after failing to meet the Seagulls valuation of around £55m for one of their most prized assets.

Graham Potter’s side are thought to be in no rush to part ways with the 23-year-old, but that has not deterred Arteta, who is planning to mount a third bid for the defender, according to Sky Sports.

If Arsenal are to get a deal over the line, they may have to act quicker than they originally thought, with a number of other sides now monitoring the defender’s situation.

Everton are rumoured to be keeping tabs on the centre-half, while Manchester City are also reportedly interested, though as things stand Arsenal are still in pole position.

As a result, Arteta is prowling the market for a goalkeeper to deputise for current number one Bernd Leno.

England international duo Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone have both been touted with moves to the Emirates, but a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggests Arteta’s focus may have shifted to Barca shot-stopper Neto.

The report claims that Arsenal have already opened talks with his representatives about a potential move.

With the dream of keeping Martin Odegaard on a permanent basis all but dead, Arsenal are forced to look for attacking midfield alternatives.

One name that has consistently been linked with a move to North London is that of Leicester City star James Maddison.

Impressing countless times during his stint in a Foxes shirt, Maddison is not expected to come cheap should he be enticed to the Emirates.

According to Football.London, Mikel Arteta is “heavily interested” in the Englishman, but could cost the Gunners more than £70million, a figure that could top their record transfer-fee for Nicolas Pepe back in 2019.
