AC Milan

“You’ve got to give credit to Milan, they’re a good side”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that he and his team-mates were given a stern test by AC Milan after they lost control of the game.

A capacity crowd at Anfield was treated to a real thriller of a game between two of the Champions League’s most storied teams, with five goals scored and some fantastic football on display from both teams.

The Rossoneri went into the first-half break with a 2-1 lead to the surprise of everyone, as they scored two quick goals towards the end of the first half through Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot opened the scoring.

Eventually, that wasn’t enough as they conceded twice in the second half with Mo Salah avenging his first half penalty miss and Henderson drilling home the winner from a corner kick that wasn’t properly cleared.

Henderson spoke after the game and reflected on the five-goal thriller, with his comments relayed by the club’s official website.

“It was a good game. It was a bit of a rollercoaster and I’m sure it was very good to watch as a neutral. It was nice to have fans back [at] a European night at Anfield, an amazing game in the end,” he said.

“I thought for the majority of the game our performance level was really good, obviously we had a spell towards the end of the first half, the last 10-15 minutes, where we weren’t quite at it and we were a little bit sloppy and we got punished with two goals.

“So, [we were] going in at half-time a little bit disappointed that we were behind but went through some finer details and what could help us in the second half and the lads came out and performed extremely well in the second half and managed to find a win, so overall we’ve got to be delighted.

“First game, you want to take three points and get them on the board early, especially at home, so we’ve got to be really pleased with that. But again, I think the performance level for 70-75 minutes was very good and we just need to learn about that 10-15-minute spell and make sure that doesn’t happen too often otherwise you’ll get punished at this level.

“We made hard work of the game but you’ve got to give credit to Milan, they’re a good side, good players, and when you’re not quite at it in a spell in a game, you get punished at this level and they did that. But I thought the boys reacted so well in the second half… we kept going, kept fighting and managed to find a couple of goals to win the game, so overall delighted with the result.”
