The creation of a new Super League is reportedly imminent, as several European football behemoths are willing to break away from UEFA and found their own competition.

Meanwhile, UEFA are expected to announce on Monday a big change of format in the Champions League, commencing from 2024, with the major European competition being at risks due to the big clubs’ plans to leave in the future.

How many teams would participate in the new Super League?

According to The Times, the new competition would be made up of a total of 20 teams, including the 15 founding clubs and five invited teams that would qualify for the tournament based on their performance each season. For the time being, it is unclear how those five places would be distributed.

What would be the competition’s format?

The 20 teams would be divided into two groups of 10, with the top four of each group progressing to the quarter-finals and the final being a single match.

Which teams would participate in the new Super League?

Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter are the 12 teams who seem to have secured their participation in the new competition, while Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are yet to agree to take part in the new tournament.

Would those clubs stop playing in domestic leagues?
