How much missing out on Champions League qualification would ‘cost’ Milan

Failure to qualify for the Champions League would be a big economic blow for AC Milan that would subsequently have an effect on the budget, a report claims.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have a couple of huge games coming up after the international break including one away against Napoli which is a precursor for the Champions League quarter-finals and then later in the month is the away match against Roma which will be fundamental in the race for fourth place.

Top four qualification is worth at least an extra €30m for Milan, who in 2021-22 – when they eliminated in the groups – collected €44m in UEFA prize money when factoring in results, market pool and historical ranking.

This year that amount is already around €75m, plus €23m in ticket sales to which the probable collection of €9m from Milan-Napoli must be added.

The Europa League, on the other hand, guarantees an average of €15m, ticket sales excluded. Even without considering the changes in sponsor contracts, fifth place would lead to a very important loss of earnings of around €30m minimum.
