GdS: Leaky defence, blunt attack – the numbers behind Milan’s poor start to 2023

By: Oliver Fisher

The year of 2023 has not been kind to AC Milan so far but there are a few statistics that show just how bad things have been this year.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) takes a look at Milan’s data in the new calendar year and it starts with the fact that the title defence vanished into thin air seemingly after the draw against Roma.

Milan are now 22 points behind the leaders Napoli and of the defending champions in the three-points-per-win era no team has been further from top spot after 27 rounds of action, with the next team being Fabio Capello’s side in 1994-95 who were 16 behind.

The defence has been a real issue for Milan this year, and only Cremonese (23) and Salernitana (23) have conceded more league goals than the Rossoneri in 2023 (21), with both sides down the bottom end of the table.

Stefano Pioli’s side have lost seven games this year when factoring in all competitions which is far more than any top four rival.

Scoring goals has been an issue too. Looking at the last 10 games, Milan have failed to score on two occasions, have scored once in six matches, twice in two games and have not scored over two goals in any.
