Trump branded the squad a “radical group of leftist maniacs” after they were beaten 1-0 by Canada in their Tokyo 2020 semi-final.

He claimed the root cause of the defeat was the number of “wokesters” in the USA team and declared more “patriots” would have guided them to the final.

Trump also hit out at Rapinoe and her teammates for disrespecting the national anthem by taking the knee – despite the fact USA did not kneel during the pre-match formalities.

Trump picked out Rapinoe for criticism and labelled her “the woman with the purple hair”

“If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of leftist maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the gold medal instead of the bronze,” said Trump.

“Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has.

“There were, however, a few patriots standing. Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our country and national anthem.

“They should replace the wokesters with patriots and start winning again.”

Trump also singled out Rapinoe with a specific barb, saying: “The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about radical left politics and not doing her job!”

Rapinoe is considered one of the finest players of her generation having won the Ballon d’Or Feminin in 2019, while she is renowned for her outspoken activism.

The OL Reign winger won Olympic gold at London 2012 and has two World Cup winners’ medals to her name from USA’s 2015 and 2019 triumphs.

Rapinoe opened the scoring and was named player of the match in the 2019 World Cup final against France.

Her enmity with Trump began in June 2019 when she declared she would not go to the White House if her side were crowned world champions that summer.

And Rapinoe hit back at how Trump celebrated his own county’s defeat at Tokyo 2020 with his fresh jibe.

“It’s a real sad dig into an old bag,” Rapinoe told WOOD-TV . “I’m just like, ‘You’re rooting for people to do bad?!’ Yikes”

Despite Trump’s outburst, US captain Becky Sauerbrunn said bronze meant “so much” to her and her teammates after USA beat Australia 4-3 in the third-place match.

She added: “It feels like we really had to earn that thing. And we’re very proud of it. Obviously we wanted to get a gold medal. Everyone wants to get a gold medal, Americans love golds.

“The fact is we potentially didn’t deserve to get a gold medal. We had to change the goal, and it became, ‘Let’s get that bronze!’”
