Barnsley 2-0 Tranmere Rovers: Oduor’s Championship side advance to FA Cup fourth round

The Harambee Star was, however, not used in the encounter his teammates won and kept a clean sheet in

Clarke Oduor’s Barnsley have advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers on Sunday.

The Harambee Stars defender did not feature, although he had been named in the matchday squad.

Michael Helik and Cauley Woodrow were the scorers for Barnsley, and they also managed to keep a clean sheet at home.

Conor Chaplin thought he had scored for Oduor’s side when his first shot on target hit the side-netting, and moments later he was also unlucky as his goal was flagged down by the referee for he was just offside.

Callum Styles, Woodrow and Dominik Frieser also came close to opening the scoring, but Tranmere’s custodian Scott Davies was superb, especially in how he stopped the latter’s effort.

Rovers then threatened through a counter-attack, and Brad Collins needed to be quick to deny Kayne Woolery, who had surged through the right wing.

Chaplin was also denied in the last minute of the first half as his shot was cleared by a sprawling defender.

In the second half, Woolery remained a threat to Rovers, and his low cross evaded Morgan Ferrier inside the penalty box, as Barnsley looked more determined to find an opener.

In the 59th minute, a good combination that involved Luke Thomas, Alex Mowatt and Herbie Kane ended up providing a cross to Helik, whose header broke the deadlock.

As Rovers spent time in Barnsley’s half, they were almost caught off-guard in the 70th minute, when Callum Styles found himself in enough space but his shot was blocked by Victor Adeboyejo.

In the fifth minute of added time and as Rovers desperately defended, Thomas was brought down and the referee awarded a penalty,

Woodrow took the spot-kick and ensured Oduor’s Championship side won the game with a 2-0 margin to progress.
