Thousands of spectators will still allowed to go to the F1 at Silverstone, and matches at Wimbledon.
Bosses at Silverstone have already staged preliminary talks with the Government about hosting next month’s British Grand Prix in front of a capacity 140,000 crowd.
And for the first time in 15 months some of the pilot events will be at maximum capacity.
Announcing the delay to Freedom Day the PM offered hope to sports fans, saying: “We will continue to pilot events, such as Euro 2020, and some theatrical performances.”
Boris said tonight:
- A review will take place by June 28, with the possibility of relaxing rules by July 5 if things improve
- The new Delta variant – first found in India – is up to 80 per cent more transmissible so more people are getting ill
- If we went ahead with step 4, then the hospitalisations could reach that of the first peak, he said
- The weddings cap of 30 people will be lifted from June 21, but all other rules will remain the same
- There was hope for the Euros being able to have a full stadium as vaccine covid pilots will continue
- Over 40s will have their second jabs faster in a race to protect more people, quicker
- The work from home order will continue
- No extra furlough help was announced as it will run until September anyway
Around 10 to 15 pilot events will take place in the next month up to the new freedom date next month.
Ticket holders will have to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to enter.
They will take place at both indoor and outdoor events, at a mix of seated and standing venues
As well as the sporting fixtures, trials will take place at some ‘cultural events’ like theatre shows, to test some more indoor venues.
Vaccine passports are already being used in England’s Euro 2020 group matches – with 22,500 already showing the pass at yesterday’s 1-0 win over Croatia.

Fans had to show the NHS app confirming they had received both Covid jabs at least 14 days before or a negative lateral flow test taken within 48 hours of the game.
They will have to repeat the process for the game against Scotland on Friday and the Czech Republic next week.
The knock-out stages and final could see more than 45,000 next month.
The Government, FA and Uefa have agreed to cap crowds at 22,500 for the three group matches, 25 per cent of Wembley’s capacity.
In an email sent to ticket holders, the regulations have been laid out.
They state: “All ticket holders aged 11 and older must present evidence that they are at a low-risk of transmitting Covid-19 to enter Wembley Stadium.
“Failure to do so will mean you’re unable to attend the match.”
The email added: “Proof of full vaccination – both doses received at least 14 days prior to the match (demonstrated via the NHS App or via the Scottish or Welsh vaccination record services).
“Or proof of a negative Lateral Flow Test (LFT), reported and demonstrated via a text message or email from NHS Test and Trace.
“This can be on your device (including a screenshot) or a printout.
“The test needs to be taken within 48 hours of the time stadium gates open (meaning three hours before match kick-off).
“Any other test results, e.g. a PCR test result from a private company, will not be accepted and entry will be denied.”
