Gareth Southgate reveals what Harry Kane has told him about Tottenham future

Harry Kane has spoken to Gareth Southgate about his Tottenham future.

Kane was “super positive” but did not disclose any details of their conversation other than to sidestep a question about whether the Spurs striker needs to be playing in the Champions League.

England captain Kane has said publicly he will not think about his future until after the summer but confessed it was a “hard question to answer” with Tottenham sweating on a place in the top four and in the Carabao Cup final.

Three Lions boss Southgate said: “What’s pleased me about Harry this week is that he’s been super positive about everything.

Harry Kane has spoken to Gareth Southgate about his future plans

“His view of where the club are at, they’re three points off a Champions League place, League Cup final to look forward to. That’s the only thing he’s discussed with me.”

Meanwhile, Southgate insists he always knew Mason Mount would win over Thomas Tuchel.

Southgate made a cutting remark post-match questioning why it was only when Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard that Mount was taken seriously as an England player.

Three Lions boss Southgate explained that he does not like snobbery around English managers but also knew that Mount would show what a good player he is.

Southgate said: “I always want English managers to do well. Part of the responsibility of the national teams is to look after young English players but also to lend a hand with coach education and to try and be inspiring as we can be for young English coaches because it is difficult to get those top jobs.

“What we knew when Thomas went in, there was quite a furore over his first team sheet when he did not pick him but we knew that Mason would find his way back into the team because it is impossible to work with a player like him and not be impressed.”
