England’s one-cap wonders – Long line of players who only played once after their call ups

James Maddison and Aaron Ramsdale are just two examples of young and talented players with just one England cap to their names – with the Nations League looming this summer both will be hoping to kick on with their international careers

Gareth Southgate is about to unveil his squad for UEFA Nations League, in what will no doubt be a vital opportunity for the England gaffer to take a good look at some different parts of his squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

In the running for selection among household names like Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, are exciting players less established in the team.

Some of these players, including the likes of James Maddison, Marc Guéhi and Aaron Ramsdale have only picked up one cap for England despite playing frequently for some of the best club sides in the country.

Getting a single call up to play for your national side is a huge honour and the stuff of dreams for millions. However, the one-cap wonder club is, unfortunately, enormous and full of names that never managed to kick on and secure a regular place in the England national squad.

Now, with the newly created UEFA Nations League looming, players like Maddison – who has had an excellent season with Leicester – will be hoping now is his moment to make the leap out of the one cap club.

When is the England UEFA Nation Nations League squad being announced?

Gareth Southgate is expected to announce his squad on May 24

The England UEFA Nation Nations League squad is being announced at 2pm on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

The team named will be heading to play in Group A3 of the tournament, where they will be taking on the likes of Hungary, Germany and fellow Euros finalists, Italy.

How many players have only got one cap for England?

At the time of writing, 360 players have played just one game for England.

The first of these were Robert Barker, John Brockbank, Frederick Chappell, Charles Clegg, Charles Morice and Arnold Kirke Smith, who all played against Scotland in 1872.

Since then, hundreds of players have pulled on the three lions, only to never do so again. 20 of these players are still active and playing professional football and so, at least in theory, have a chance of playing for England once again and getting themselves out of the one-cap wonder club.
