Chris Hughton was unable to turn Forest’s fortunes around

Chris Hughton has paid the price for Nottingham Forest’s poor start to the season.

He was axed with the team sitting bottom of the Championship table. They lost 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

Forest have just a solitary point from their first seven games. They are winless in their last 13 league games, a run stretching back to last season.

The club posted a statement shortly after 9am this morning, saying: “Nottingham Forest can confirm that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as first team manager.

“Chris joined the club in a difficult period for everyone in football and around the world and we thank him for the way he has conducted himself during his tenure.

“Steven Reid will take temporary charge of the first team as interim head coach.

“The search for the permanent successor has begun and the club will update supporters in due course. The club would like to wish Chris all the best in his future career.”

The search is now on for Hughton’s successor. Chris Wilder, the former Sheffield United boss, is said to be interested in the post.

However, ex-England captain John Terry has publicly said he is not in the running. Terry posted on Instagram earlier this week, prior to Hughton’s exit.

He said: “I just want to distance myself from the Nottingham Forest job, and all the speculation surrounding myself with the job.

“Unfortunately I can’t control the media, but it’s important to know it has nothing to do with me whatsoever.”

He went on to add: “It’s unfair when Chris is in a job to put my name to something.”

It is unclear whether his stance now changes with the hotseat at the City Ground now vacant.

Terry had a brief loan spell at Forest in 2000, playing six times.
