How the change to Haaland’s release clause affects PSG, Real Madrid and other suitors

There has been some mystery around the future of Erling Haaland because, as MARCA reported back in July 2022, he has more than one type of release clause in his contract.

It was understood that he would cost 200 million euros if he were to leave Manchester City in 2024 and 175m euros if he leaves in 2025.

The adorable moment a baby couldn’t stop staring at Haaland

The Norwegian, as part of his negotiation, managed to impose two release clauses on Manchester City in a formula he already used in his time at Borussia Dortmund and RB Salzburg.

The clauses are linked to the achievement of sporting objectives and the figures are high, but at the same time affordable for the clubs interested in the striker.

Well advised from the beginning by the late Mino Raiola, he resorted to this formula to leave Borussia Dortmund last summer for the Premier League after Manchester City paid 100m euros (70m euros for the release clause and 30m euros in commissions).

It was also used to leave his previous club, RB Salzburg, in the summer of 2019, with Dortmund paying 20m euros by exercising the same clause.

A change of conditions regarding Haaland’s release clause

Now, however, the scenario has changed. As reported by Oriol Domenech on Catalunya Radio, Haaland‘s commitment to Manchester City was linked to the future of Pep Guardiola and it was specified that the exit clause could be changed if the Catalan coach renewed.

Guardiola extended his contract last November until June 2025, meaning the attacker’s clause has also been automatically renewed and it is now 200m euros for 2025, not 175m euros.

As such, the Norwegian’s suitors are now faced with another price and timeline, which could have major implications in the transfer market.

According to RMC Sports, PSG are willing to pay around 200m euros for the Norwegian, a move that could affect Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Neymar.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, continue to work in parallel to their plan for Kylian Mbappe, with the alternative of Haaland requiring payment of the 200m euro clause all the way up until 2025.

Basically, Guardiola‘s renewal means it’ll be harder for other clubs to prize this striker away from the Etihad, or that he’ll end up staying there a little longer than some had hoped.
