Jose Mourinho: Roma manager says he does not listen to critics ahead of Europa League final – ‘I don’t care’

Jose Mourinho says he does not care if people question his methods as a manager.

Five-time European winner Mourinho is set to manage in the sixth European final of his career when Roma face Sevilla in the Europa League final in Budapest on Wednesday evening.

The Portuguese boss is also looking to build on his Europa Conference League victory with Roma last season by adding a second piece of silverware with the club since his arrival in 2021.

Roma beat Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 over two legs in the Europa League semi-finals and recorded just 28% possession as they held on for a 0-0 draw in the second leg in Germany.

When asked if he cares about his critics, he told BT Sport in an interview before the final: “I don’t care. What can I do? Fight everyone? I cannot do it. I work hard, I try my best.

“That’s my education. That’s what I do every day. My history is there, no-one can [dis]believe.

“It’s also my philosophy of life. It’s not ‘I want this and this’. We have a final on Wednesday and I’m going to do everything I can to try and win it.”

Mourinho says his side deserve to be in the Europa League final and that they will show “no fear” against Sevilla as the Serie A club chase their third ever European title.

He said: “Last season I had to explain to the club what a UEFA media day was because they didn’t know. Now, it’s the second time for them, and it looks like it’s normal to have it. It’s not normal to have it, at all.

“I came to Rome with this objective to try to develop them as a club and reach the special moments that define the history of a club. There are clubs where a final is just one more final. For Roma, it’s not that, it’s very special.

“The only thing I know is that I work so hard. I cannot complain about the people around me because with them, it’s the same thing.

“There is no secret. We are chasing things; we are not waiting for things to happen. We are not afraid; we show no fear.

“We know our qualities and our problems. We try to hide our problems and play to our strengths. We are really a very strong group on a human level. The guys deserve so much to play in this final.”
