Robbie Savage reacts to son Charlie signing new Man Utd contract


Robbie Savage has seen his son Charlie sign a new long-term deal at Manchester United after the teenager made his debut for the first-team earlier this season

Robbie Savage has paid tribute to his son Charlie after the teenager penned a new long-term deal at Manchester United.

The 19-year-old made his first team debut this term, coming off the bench for United as they drew with Young Boys in the Champions League. His father was on commentating duty for BT Sport and Charlie has continued to develop at Old Trafford.

He has agreed a new deal that will keep him in Manchester until June 2025, with the option to extend for a further 12 months as United continue to invest in their youth prospects. His father said on social media: “So proud, thank you to everyone involved. Huge thank you to Chris and Jake at new era.”

Charlie himself said on Twitter : “Great way to end an amazing season. Delighted to sign a long-term contract with this special club. Thank you to my family for their support, without them it would never have been possible. Time for a short break before going again.”

The teenager signed his first pro deal in April last year having made 23 starts for the club’s U18 side. Charlie has continued to play among United’s youth ranks, throughout the 2021/22 campaign he’s played 19 times for the U23 side and scored in the 3-0 win over Everton back in March.

Charlie has also been a regular for the U21 side, being one of only four players to start every game EFL Trophy group stage game as the Red Devils faced Lincoln City, Bradford City and Sunderland. A picture was recently posted on social media which showed the teenager and Cristiano Ronaldo is conversation.

Savage Jnr’s debut came during a game where several academy products were given their first piece of exposure. Zidane Iqbal also came off the bench for the Red Devils as they continue to invest in youth. United have endured a difficult season but enjoyed a rare high as they won the FA Youth Cup.

They saw off Nottingham Forest in front of a packed Old Trafford. Alejandro Garnacho, who was recently handed his first team debut by Ralf Rangnick, was among the stars on show, scoring twice.

Erik ten Hag’s arrival is set to mix things up when it comes to the playing group. The former Ajax boss has backed youth during his time in Amsterdam and could do so again in Manchester. Several first team players are poised to leave which will open doors for some of the younger prospects.
