Newcastle remain intent on signing Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard on loan this month but have yet to agree on a deal with the Red Devils.

United are happy to let Lingard leave on loan for the remainder of the season but have made several requests on the deal, which the Magpies are reluctant to meet.

Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his option in the middle of the park as his side aim to avoid the drop this season, with the 29-year-old seen as a good fit for the club.

But key to the deal is United’s insistence that Newcastle agree to a £12million clause which they will have to pay if Lingard helps them avoid relegation and stay in the Premier League.

United believe the ball is firmly in the Magpies’ court as they wait for a new offer from the north-east club, according to the Manchester Evening News, with the clock ticking ahead of deadline day.

But former Newcastle player Jose Enrique feels otherwise and has urged Howe not to strike a deal with United for Lingard.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, Enrique said: “Jesse Lingard is a very good player when he’s on form.

“Obviously Eddie knows better, but long term I don’t know if he’s the right player.”

“Off the field, he’s not my kind of player if I was a manager.

“But if he can help them now he would definitely be a good signing.”

Lingard enjoyed a highly successful loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of last season after moving to the Hammers this time last year.

The 29-year-old was instrumental in David Moyes’ side achieving European football as he scored nine goals and assisted a further five in just 16 Premier League appearances.

And it is now believed that Lingard is keen on a move to the north east in order to play more regular first team football, having already rejected a new contract offer from United in November.

Man Utd’s demands have proved to be yet another roadblock in Newcastle’s pursuit of players this month, as negotiations have now stalled.

Lingard has certainly shown what he can offer after that spell in east London last season, and Howe needs someone with Premier League experience to hit the ground running.

It’s been a window of frustration for Newcastle on the whole as they have struggled to get a number of targets across the line, with Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood still their only arrivals as yet.
