Jose Mourinho moves for transfer reunion with Man Utd outcast after Old Trafford decision

Jose Mourinho is set to offer Manchester United reject Sergio Romero a Roma lifeline following the Argentine’s departure from Old Trafford.

Romero has spent the last six months picking up his £70,000-a-week wages back in Buenos Aires after being told by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he was surplus to requirements.

But Mourinho – the manager who played him in United’s 2017 Europa League triumph over Ajax – now wants to take him to Italy after being named Roma’s new boss.

Romero, 36, also has offers from Boca Juniors and Racing Club in his homeland.

But he is tempted to link-up again with Mourinho, having enjoyed his four-year spell with Serie A rivals Sampdoria before moving to United in 2015.

Romero was angry that Old Trafford bosses blocked his proposed move to Everton last summer after the Reds rejected the offer of a £2million loan fee and demanded £8million.

He played 61 times for United in his six seasons with the club, seven of them in the Premier League, after being brought in as David De Gea’s understudy.

He made 96 appearances for Argentina between 2009-18.

Roma are looking for an experienced keeper to challenge Spaniard Pau Lopez after veteran Antonio Mirante left the club. Romero was one of eight players released by United this week.

He and 24-year-old Portuguese ‘keeper Joel Pereira were both allowed to exit, the latter departing after returning from a loan spell at Huddersfield.

United also released six academy players: Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor and Aliou Traore.

Juan Mata and Lee Grant are both out of contract this summer also and were set to depart, but have opened talks over new deals.

Grant is almost certain to remain, but Mata could seek more playing time elsewhere, after only 10 starts throughout the entirety of 2020-21.
