Heung-Min Son was close to tears as he opened up on his immense disappointment following Tottenham’s loss to Manchester United.
It was the South Korean who scored the game’s opening goal as the hosts went into the break 1-0 up.
Holding on to leads has been a major issue for the north London side and that was again true to form.
Three second-half goals saw United claim the three points and further dented Tottenham’s top four hopes.
Son was desperate to make up for his recent injury absence and give the club’s fan base something to cheer about, so failure to do so didn’t sit well with the 28-year-old.
In an interview with Spurs’ media team at full-time, a visibly emotional Son said: “I’m really disappointed this afternoon. I don’t know what to say, I’m really sorry. I feel bad, I know how passionate the fans are here.
“I’m not bothered about the goal. I just really want to win because I came on last game, back from injury, we were leading and then drew.
“I played today so I really wanted to get the win, but I don’t know what to say.”
Jose Mourinho praised the attitude of his Tottenham side as he talked up the possibilities that still remain with a Carabao Cup final to come in a fortnight.
And Son underlined his desire to end on a high note as he dealt with the reverse.
“Eight games left. I know its always easy to say ‘lets be positive’ but I really want to finish the season well,” he added.

“Six points behind top four, we need to get results and hope the teams above us drop points. We have to take a big responsibility.”
The interviewer finished by saying: “Sonny, I’ve known you for six years and have done lots of interviews with you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so low.”
After a long pause, Son replied: “Yeah. It’s a really sad afternoon. I know it sounds crazy that I’m so down but football is all about the results. If we win I’m happy and if we lose I’m down for two or three days.”
Son was also subjected to racist abuse following his role in a disallowed goal for United.
Tottenham issued a statement which said: “This has again been reported to the platforms and we shall now undertake a full review alongside the Premier League to determine the most effective action moving forward. We stand with you, Sonny.”
