Real Madrid’s strong start to the LaLiga Santander campaign continued on Sunday evening as they secured a 2-1 victory over Valencia.
While Los Blancos completed a late comeback courtesy of Vinicius and Karim Benzema, their defensive frailties resurfaced as Dani Carvajal was forced off with injury and as Lucas Vazquez struggled when coming on. As such, the need for reinforcements at right-back were clearly demonstrated at Mestalla.
Karim Benzema and Vinicius continued their fine respective starts to the season, but also showed why they are one of the best partnerships in world football at the moment. Benzema set up Vinicius for his equaliser after 86 minutes, before the Brazilian returned the favour with a perfectly-weighted cross for the Frenchman to head home two minutes later.
In spite of the defeat, Jose Bordalas once again demonstrated why he is one of the best coaches in Spain. He has built on the fine spell he enjoyed at Getafe and, while Los Blancos emerged with the three points on Sunday night, they were made to suffer for them.
With 24 minutes on the clock, three players went down with injuries: Carlos Soler, Thierry Correia and Dani Carvajal. The Real Madrid right-back’s injury problems once again resurfaced, after missing 190 days of last season through injury. Lucas Vazquez came on for Carvajal, but struggled and it was his poor attempt at a clearance that set Hugo Duro up for Valencia‘s goal.
Valencia took the lead after 66 minutes at Mestalla through a fierce strike from Hugo Duro, who played for Real Madrid last season. However, he was unable to establish himself in the first-team before moving to Valencia this summer and showed his former club what they were missing out on with a fine left-footed strike.
