Umar Sadiq: The giant with crooked feet who’ll threaten Real Madrid

Newly promoted Almeria will host Real Madrid on Sunday for their LaLiga Santander opener, which will be Umar Sadiq‘s first game in the Spanish top flight after impressing for the Andalusians last season in LaLiga SmartBank.

Sadiq kicked off his career in Europe at Spezia before being spotted by former Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini, who didn’t hesitate to bring him to the Italian capital.

“He was devastating for opponents,” Sabatini told MARCA.

“We took a phenomenon with us. A player who has amazing speed for his height. And he scores goals. He has always scored them with great ease.

“With our B team he scored a lot. [Former Roma coach] Rudi Garcia saw it clearly. He brought him on one day against Genoa and he scored eight minutes after coming on the pitch.

“The following matchday, he came off the bench against Chievo in the 88th minute and scored in the 89th minute.”

A couple of years before Sabatini spotted his talent, Sadiq had arrived in the Liguria region with the few clothes that could fit in a backpack and he was taken in by the Mobilio family in the village of Lavagna.

His first years in Italy were marked by injuries. At first, they thought it was a growth problem, until someone noticed his feet.

His stride was strange, inwards in an exaggerated way. Once that problem was solved, the injuries disappeared and Sadiq stood out. By the time Sabatini took Sadiq to the Italian capital, there was no trace of his foot problem.

“He was a quiet lad, very polite and quite disciplined,” Sabatini added.

“He had that cunning or mischievousness of those who grew up in the street.

“Sometimes I despaired, I got angry at the way he played because it seemed like he was doing it for himself. But then I saw everything he gave us.”
