Ten River Plate players test positive for COVID-19 ahead of Boca Juniors clash


As many as 10 River Plate players tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday and will miss out on the derby against Boca Juniors on Sunday.

Nicolas De La Cruz, Bruno Zuculini, Enrique Bologna, Rafael Santos Borre, Federico Girotti, Paulo Diaz, Robert Rojas, Gonzalo Montiel, Santiago Simon and Franco Petroli have all returned positive results.

Half of those players were expected to start in the Superclasico, while the goalkeepers’ coach Alberto Montes had also tested positive.

“Due to the fact that some players presented symptoms compatible with COVID-19, the medical department decided to carry out new tests this Saturday, May 15,” read River Plate‘s statement.

“After [carrying out the tests], the following players gave positive results: Paulo Daz, Federico Girotti, Enrique Bologna, Germn Lux, Robert Rojas, Nicols De La Cruz, Rafael Borr, Bruno Zuculini, Toms Castro Ponce and Franco Petroli.

“The rest of the tests on players and coaching staff gave negative results. Likewise, River informs that it suspended the training camp originally scheduled for today at the Alvear Icon Hotel.”

The game for the Argentine Copa de la Liga quarterfinals is scheduled to kick off at 22:30CEST on Sunday.
