Real Madrid vs Liverpool: A fearsome Liverpool side await Real Madrid

Liverpool’s decline this season has been notable, especially compared to the team that conquered the Premier League and went all the way to the trophy in 2019/20.

However, the Reds have managed to bounce back recently and significantly improve on the pitch, registering three straight wins and the same number of clean sheets in their last three games in all compeititions.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, 25 points behind leaders Manchester City. The Reds have picked up 34 fewer points than last season, having conceded 15 more goals (36 compared to last season’s 21) and having scored 15 fewer (51 to 66).

Despite maintaining the backbone that led them to Premier League glory last season and Champions League success the year before, Liverpool have experienced a drop-in form since their elimination from the major European competition at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

The Reds were top of the league until Matchday 15 of the Premier League, but a series of serious injuries to first-choice players has plagued the team since.

Diogo Jota has missed 15 games, Thiago Alcantara another 12, Fabinho eight and Jordan Henderson was sidelined for crucial games too.

However, their biggest issue this season was their absences in defence as their starting centre-backs Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have missed 45, 39 and 22 games respectively and counting.

Liverpool have yet to rediscover last year’s marvellous form, but have gained confidence following their latest results, which were capped off with clean sheets.

Meanwhile, their breakthrough player this season, Diogo Jota, has been the most positive news for a side that has struggled a lot in the last few months.
