Real Madrid – La Liga: Benzema about to renew at Real Madrid until 2023

Karim Benzema is close to renewing his Real Madrid contract until 2023. Should nothing go wrong the No.9’s stay in the capital will be extended from 2022 by a year, and it should be wrapped up before the end of the season.

Benzema has already received the call to renew from the club, with them keen to recognise the outstanding performances he has delivered so far this season.

Real Madrid, by offering a one-year extension, remain true to their policy of only taking things year by year for players over the age of 30; they have simply advanced the negotiations by a year in Benzema‘s case to avoid the player entering the final year of his contract, as has happened with Sergio Ramos, Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric.

The agreement is expected to be signed before the end of the 2020/21 season, unless something changes dramatically, as the relationship between the player and the club is very good. Since his 2009 arrival, Benzema has never asked for an increase in pay or a new contract – it has always been the club going to the player with a new offer – and he has hardly made any alterations to anything put to him.

Benzema has been clear about his desire to play at Real Madrid until 2023 at least, and he spoke about staying on beyond 2022 after the win over Atalanta.

“My door is open if the president wants to renew my contract,” he said then.

Benzema‘s former club Lyon have been keeping an eye on his situation in Madrid, and they want to sign him for his final years before retirement. That possibility hasn’t been ruled out, as Benzema could join in 2023 as a 35-year-old.

As things stand, Benzema is one of Real Madrid‘s most important players, and his professionalism cannot be questioned. He still has a lot to offer the club and they’re hoping to keep him for another two years.

The No.9 is the fifth top scorer in Los Blancos‘ history, and he looks likely to end his time there as third in the all-time ranking, behind only Raul Gonzalez and Cristiano Ronaldo.
