Euro 2021: Morata has Luis Enrique’s full support

If there is one thing that Luis Enrique likes, it is quashing debates surrounding his players and persevering with his ideas. There is no better illustration of this than Alvaro Morata and, if the striker continues to work hard in training, there is no doubt that he will start again against Poland, to some fans’ disappointment.

Some fans were jeering Morata when the player was substituted in the 66th minute against Sweden for Pablo Sarabia, but Luis Enrique defended the player afterwards.

“For me, Morata is a great player who does many good things in attack and defence,” the coach said in his press conference.

“He didn’t score, but that is something he has to deal with. He is used to it. It is much easier when the fans are on your side.”

Luis Enrique is likely to start Morata once more on Saturday as the coach tries to lift the striker’s spirits and boost his confidence.

Morata will keep his place in the team unless he picks up a knock or Gerard Moreno finds some goalscoring form coming off the bench.

It’s not only his coach who admires him, however, as many other members of the starting line-up gave him encouragement, knowing that it’s a matter of time until the goals come.

“Maybe he’ll play the next game, score three goals and shut everyone up, as he works a lot for the team,” said Aymeric Laporte, backing Morata.

Marcos Llorente was also singing Morata‘s praises.

“He is important to us and was unlucky in front of goal, but it will come,” Llorente said.

“Anyone who is on the pitch wants to be greeted by applause.”

Despite the fact that Luis Enrique and his teammates remain hot on Morata, the fans appear to have made their minds up even when he boasts good statistics playing for his country.

Morata has scored 19 goals in 41 games and won 25 times, drawing 10 and losing just six matches playing for Spain.
