Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues hopeful Man Utd fitness update as two stars return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is “hopeful” that Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford will emerge from their first training session back unscathed as he considers them for selection this weekend.

The Manchester United pair were both unavailable for international duty recently due to injury.

Their return has proved timely however and they are in contention for United’s game with Brighton on Sunday.

Solskjaer’s squad haven’t escaped from the international break without a few knocks however.

Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof are doubts having sustained problems while with France and Sweden respectively.

The United boss said: “As always when you send them away on an international break, you keep your fingers crossed they’ll be available for you.

“I don’t know about Anthony, he didn’t join in training this morning, but Marcus and Mason trained for the first time this morning and hopefully they can get through that with no reaction.

“If they complete the session tomorrow, they might be available for selection.”

He then told MUTV: “Neither of them [Martial nor Lindelof] trained this morning. We are still waiting for final confirmation on how they are.”

Paul Pogba is also being eased back into action following an injury lay off.

France boss Didier Deschamps confessed that the midfielder is not yet at his best, but Solskjaer is pleased to have him back.

“He’ll be a massive boost. He’s come back bright and he’s ready to go. We know how important he will be for us and how important he has been,” he said.

“To have players of his quality out for longer periods, that just shows the quality of the others as well that we’ve done so well.”

United’s last game before the international break was a 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Leicester.

It means the Europa League is now their only chance of silverware with Solskjaer keen to consolidate their top four spot.

United remain in pole position to secure Champions League football for the second successive year.

They hold an eight point advantage over West Ham in fifth and haven’t lost in their last nine league games.
