The San Siro pitch received a lot of criticism ahead of the international break, so much that it was decided that it would have to be relaid. As a result, it’s now in great condition just in time for the Derby Della Madonnina.
Usually, the pitch is relaid in the summer ahead of a new season but the tight schedule and the subsequent distress on the pitch forced action. According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), the work is complete and the pitch looks a lot better.
It took 12 days and 20 gardeners to complete the transformation, but it was needed. The cost of the work is €500k and considering how the pitch looked before, it was well worth it as both Milan and Inter struggled to even play on the pitch.
The Derby Della Madonnina is a huge game (especially this season) and there will surely be a lot of people watching overseas as well. It would have been extremely bad PR to have a pitch in poor condition, no doubt.
👀 The San Siro pitch then and now. It looks like it was the right decision to fix it during the break.
