The United States keep falling short. After failing to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the USMNT have now missed out on going to the Olympic Games in Tokyo, having fallen 2-1 to Honduras.
Despite having arguably their greatest ever generation of talent, the US have failed to do what they had set out to do. It’s not their first or even second failure of late, though. They also managed to miss out on London 2012 and the Games in Rio in 2016 as well.
Curiously, Honduras have appeared in their way more than once. It was the Honduran team who kept them away from Rio and now Tokyo.
On their way to the Olympics, the US fell in their group that consisted of El Salvador, Canada and Cuba, finishing with just four points.
Leading the group with nine points, they looked to be on their way to the tournament, having beaten Cuba, Canada and Panama. But they met Honduras in the semi-finals and lost 2-0.
Their path to the Olympics in Tokyo ended against the same opponents. They finished second in a group with Mexico, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, but again lost in the semi-finals.
