Copa del Rey: Barcelona are still cup kings

Barcelona won their 31st Copa del Rey title by beating the second most successful team in the competition’s history on Saturday night.

The Blaugrana move eight clear of Athletic Club’s total of 23 Copa titles in the all-time standings, with Real Madrid back in third place on 19 titles.

It’s another disappointing night for Athletic, who miss out on their 24th Copa for the second time in the space of two weeks having lost last season’s final to Real Sociedad.

Having lost successive finals, Athletic have now been runners-up for times than anyone else in Copa del Rey history. They’ve finished second on six occasions, beaten by Barcelona four times and Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid once each.

This Copa victory is a revenge of sorts for what happened earlier in the season, when Athletic beat Barcelona in the final of the Supercopa de Espana.
