Barcelona | European Super League: Florentino Perez raises Barcelona suspicions after refereeing comment

Florentino Perez is adamant that the proposed new European Super League will deliver benefits to the participating clubs.

The project has been received with overwhelming negativity across the football world, but the European Super League president is sticking to his guns.

“VAR and refereeing will be better in the new competition, and it will also encourage financial fair play and stability of clubs,” Florentino Perez told Josep Pedrerol on El Chiringuito.

The Real Madrid president stated that each club has signed a binding agreement to go ahead with the project and that none of them are looking to withdraw.

His comment about referees is sure to have raised some eyebrows in Catalonia, but Florentino Perez revealed that he had spoken to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who has also committed the Blaugrana to the project.

“It wasn’t hard to convince Laporta,” Florentino Perez said.

“As a responsible person he knows there’s no other option.”

It would be quite the about-turn from Laporta, given that during his recent Barcelona presidential campaign he seemed against the idea.

Barcelona are in a difficult financial situation and he knows that this new competition can keep them going,” Florentino Perez said.

“Financially it will save everyone, it will save football.”
