Milan and Inter wait for steps forward but new stadium unlikely to open before 2026

It is now very likely that the new stadium project will not be completed in time for the 2026 Winter Olympic games, according to a report.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive) provides an update on the new stadium plans and reports that the two clubs are waiting for the official green light from the Council after the recent elections, during which Giuseppe Sala kept his position as mayor of Milan.

The talks will be resumed shortly with a meeting to be stages at the Palazzo Marino next week, and it is hoped that the clubs will be able to officially launch the executive project. After that comes the choosing of the architectural project by the end of the year, with the ‘Cathedral’ designed by Populous and the ‘Two Rings’ by Sportium doing battle to land the job.

The idea of inaugurating the new stadium in 2026 – therefore in time for the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Olympic Games – has officially vanished, and that has now been given to the Verona Arena.
