GdS: Sozza’s handling of Milan-Fiorentina deserves praise

There were three crucial incidents for referee Simone Sozza and his officiating crew to mull over during last night’s 2-1 win over Fiorentina.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have taken a look at the three incidents in question, and in each case the VAR chief Fabbri did not intervene, leaving the decision taken by Sozza on the field as the one that should stand.

In the first half (34′) the magnifying glass came out for a challenge by Pierre Kalulu or Biraghi. However, the Frenchman got the ball first and then the defender’s leg on the follow through, so the referee let it go because it is a natural game dynamic.

There was a penalty shout in the second half when Fikayo Tomori’s sliding challenge saw Jonathan Ikoné go down, but the key factor is not that in the end the Englishman manages to touch the ball but that the winger seems to widen his left leg to propitiate the impact.

Finally, the goal in the 92nd minute, which was the subject of a double protest. Terracciano coming out bumped into Rebic who has his eyes turned to the ball, while shortly before there was a dubious challenge between Duncan and Rebic that Sozza, very close, did not consider a foul.
