Franco Baresi was promoted from his role as club ambassador to vice-president almost one year ago and has since continued his great history with the club. Currently, he’s also involved in the stadium project.
Milan have been trying to get the green light for their new stadium for several years now but it seems they are getting closer. It will be built along with Inter, although concerns have been raised with regards to the Nerazzurri’s financial situation.
In an interview with The Athletic, Baresi confirmed that one of Elliott Management’s main goals is to build a new stadium. It will not only benefit Milan and their financial situation, but also the entire league in terms of appeal.
“I must say that in the history of Milan, innovation and anticipating the future has been a secret of the owners and presidents. From coaches to tactics, the new ownership (Elliott Management) is also looking ahead and it is fundamental to have a privately-owned stadium. Italian football has always had great appeal and we have to get back to being competitive in Europe.
“Milan, Inter and Juve are the biggest clubs and they have to pull the others along with them. The stadium can become an incentive and valuable resource,” he stated.
As said, it seems Milan are getting closer to the final green light but it’s certain that the new stadium won’t be in use before 2026. San Siro will host the opening ceremony of the Olympics as its final job, which has been decided by the Milan mayor.
