Civil war has broken out among Premier League clubs who want to stop the Saudi ownership bankrolling a huge spending spree with “in-house” sponsorship deals.

Now executives from all of Europe’s top leagues have urged UEFA to ensure they clamp down on spending when they were asked directly about the Newcastle takeover and the unrest among the other Premier League clubs.

Jacco Swart, managing director of the influential European Leagues group, said: “The takeover of Newcastle, let’s be very clear, is a domestic issue and is something to be dealt with by the Premier League and their clubs. That’s the one thing.

“The other thing is there are quite a lot of examples which really show it is very important and it is urgent to come up with a set of more strict Financial Fair Play regulations including a very strict sanctioning method which is not just financial sanctions but sporting sanctions.

“Competitive balance is one of our main objectives, keeping or restoring competitive balance in domestic competitions. We can spend a lot of time discussing this and it’s part of the UEFA convention so we do have a clear position on this.

“The basic principle is: earn it on the pitch. Sporting merit is the principle of football, the principle of the European sports model, in fact. You can earn your success and then reach the next level.”

The European Leagues has also held talks with Arsene Wenger about FIFA’s grand plan to bring in a biennial World Cup and they rejected the proposals.

Swart added: “The European Leagues all strongly reject all the FIFA proposals. The FIFA proposals are detrimental to domestic football, to the leagues, to the clubs and to all of the fans. The World Cup should be played at the current frequency.”
